Fresh Breath

What is bad breath (halitosis)?

Bad breath is coined in the dental terminology as halitosis, is one of the top three reasons for a visit to Keele Major Mac dental centre. Tooth decay and periodontal disease are common causes of bad breath. (That’s how important fresh breath is!!!). In about 90% of cases, bad breath originates in the mouth itself and differs by degrees during the day. The remaining 10% of bad breath cases, the origin is from outside of the mouth.

What causes bad breath?

Diet such as fish, garlic, meat, cheese and onions, smoking and alcohol, and even hunger (a prolonged empty stomach) are common culprits. These culprits are easily solved with a good teeth brushing, flossing and rinsing regimen. Bad breath may also indicate gum disease or diabetic symptoms.

How can I obtain a fresh breath?

– Brush your teeth and your tongue regularly, twice daily, early in the morning and before bed at night

– Floss regularly, twice daily, early in the morning and just before bed at night

– Rinse regularly, twice daily, early in the morning and just before bed at night

– Drink water regularly, about 2L a day for an average weight adult

– Check your sinuses with your medical doctors

– Chew chewing gum to increase saliva and rinse away bacteria

– Visit your dentist at least twice a year, or more if needed, customized to your own dental needs.
