Root Canal Treatment

Root Canal Treatment

What is a root canal treatment?

A root canal procedure is performed to treat from inside the canals of the tooth in order to save it when the nerve of that tooth has become badly infected or the pulp damaged.

A root canal procedure involves:

1. Removal of the infected pulp and nerve tissue inside the canal(s) of the affected tooth, in order to remove the infection and prevent future infection.

2.The hollow canal(s) after disinfection is then filled with a biologically inert material, called gutta percha. Then the space in the pulp chamber and the tooth will be filled with bonded resin permanently.

Following a root canal treatment, if the tooth has an extensive restoration, it is often recommended by Dr. Jacqueline Ha and her associates to be protected with a crown.

The root canal procedure

A root canal procedure typically requires one dental visit at Keele MajorMac Dental Centre and is performed by Dr. Jacqueline Ha and her associates or an endodontic specialist in case the tooth has some irregular hidden difficulties. One or two digital xray images are taken to assess the shape of the root canals and any indication of infection in the surrounding bony structure.

What happens following my root canal treatment?

Following the root canal procedure, a simple home care instruction will be given and a follow up appointment will help reduce complication risks. Dr. Jacqueline Ha or her associates may prescribe anti-inflammatories or antibiotics to help reduce the risk of infection. Your tooth may be recommended to receive a crown or a crown and post for protection purposes. After the root canal treatment, once the tooth is healed at the apex, you will be able to enjoy food and drinks without sensitivity or pain.
